GuidesHow to Build a Targeted B2B Prospect List
Editorial guide · Updated October 2026 · Affiliate disclosure
Turn an ideal customer profile into a clean, usable prospecting list.
A repeatable list-building procedure
Write the ideal customer profile
Choose one primary buyer segment and define industry, company size, geography, business trigger and excluded accounts. For example, target regional service firms with multiple branches rather than “all businesses.” Document the reason that segment is likely to need your offer.
Build an account-first table
Create columns for account name, website, region, industry, employee band, reason for fit, source and research date. Deduplicate on company domain and inspect subsidiaries manually. Do not start by collecting thousands of personal emails.
Add roles and verify
For each accepted account, identify the function that owns the problem and an alternative stakeholder. Confirm current employment and appropriate role before adding contact details. Track unknown fields rather than guessing.
Score and prioritize
Use simple transparent criteria: fit with your service, urgency signal, reachable decision-maker and exclusion flags. A score is a prioritization aid, not a prediction of conversion. Review the first 25 records manually before scaling the process.
Illustrative output
A sample list might include 100 researched accounts, 70 that meet the ICP, 55 with a relevant role identified and 42 with independently verified contact details. The usable list is 42 contacts; the other records stay in research or exclusion queues.
A practical decision worksheet
Before choosing a product or process, write down the intended buyer segment, required fields or actions, the sample size you will test, the evidence you will accept, the owner of the next step, and the cost or time threshold that would make the result worthwhile. Record failed cases as carefully as successful ones. This creates a repeatable decision rather than a feature-list impression.
